Centre Reopening Updates

Overview

We have been working hard on plans to reopen our leisure centres. We are pleased to announce that Reading Sport and Leisure (RSL) centres at Meadway Sports Centre, Palmer Park Sports Stadium and South Reading Leisure Centre, will reopen from Monday 3rd August.

It will be a phased reopening with the safety of the public and our staff as a top priority. We will be closely following the national guidance and governing body safety recommendations, including measures such as enhanced cleaning schedule at all centres and staff working in small ‘bubbles’ to reduce risk of transmission. You will also see safety guidance signage and where appropriate, queuing and one-way systems.

Centre opening times will be reduced and the number and variety of activities offered will be limited to allow for social distancing guidelines.

Centre opening times
Meadway Sports Centre: Monday - Friday 7.00am - 1.00pm and 5.00 - 8.00pm, Saturday and Sunday 8am - 1.00pm
Palmer Park Sports Stadium: Monday - Friday 4.00 - 10.00pm, Saturday and Sunday 9.00am - 2.00pm
South Reading Leisure Centre: Monday - Friday 7.00am – 1.00pm and 4.15 - 8.00pm, Saturday 8.00am - 12noon

Pre-booking

You will need to pre-book gym, exercise classes and swimming online here, or by clicking the 'Book Now' button or call the centre direct. Please only visit the centre if you have an advance booking.

Gym and swimming sessions will be a standard length of 45 mins, with 15 minutes cleaning/change over time between sessions.

Swimming

The pool at South Reading will be welcoming back swimming clubs. It will also offer a small number of public adult lane swimming sessions (up to 2 hours per day). Numbers will be limited due to restrictions with changing room space, following Swim England safety guidance.

We will be offering two 45 minute Adult Swimming sessions at South Reading Leisure Centre, Monday - Friday. Morning session start times: 10.30am and 10.45am. The afternoon sessions will start at 4.30pm and 4.45pm. Sessions must be pre-booked. Session start times are staggered to avoid overcrowding in the changing rooms.

Initially communal areas will be closed off. Toilet facilities will be available but there will be no access to changing rooms or showers for members using the gyms and exercise classes.

The number of people using the swimming pool changing rooms will be limited and so please change at home first and come ‘beach ready’ where possible.

Meadway pool will remain closed for now. However, we are working towards bringing back our adult and family swimming sessions and our swimming lessons to Meadway Sports Centre. Once we have confirmed dates all information will be posted on our web pages.

The paddling pool at Christchurch Meadows will not reopen this season. Public safety has to remain our overriding priority with the virus still in circulation and the need to enforce safe social distancing would be extremely difficult in such a popular facility.

Palmer stadium

The outdoor track facilities has already opened to clubs at Palmer Park. The gym will open from 3 August.

Keep everyone safe

Please follow the safety guidance when you visit our centres:
• If you are feeling unwell or have any coronavirus symptoms (a new continuous cough, high temperature or loss of taste or smell), please do not visit our centres
• Only visit if you have booked a session
• Please help everyone maintain a minimum 2m distance and don’t be offended when others try to maintain a distance from you
• Wear a face covering if you can. It is not mandatory but contributes to protecting others.
• Please be patient if you need to queue and follow the marked 2m queuing lanes outside our centres. Inside please follow our one-way system where possible.
• Wash your hands before and after you visit. Hand sanitiser will be provided for you to use.
• Use the spray disinfectant provided to clean equipment you’ve used.
• Please note there is no casual access for use of centre toilets.
• Please come ‘beach’ ready for your session: there will be no access to changing rooms or showers for gym or class activity and very limited changing room access for swimming.
